August 2024 Movie Preview: Horror Movies Own The Month

It is the final month of the summer movie season and I will say it is heavy on the horror/thriller side. That is totally ok with me as we have several horror films coming out including the latest installment of a popular sci-fi franchise and a remake that looks…well not great. Here is my movie preview for August.

Trap

We start the month off with the latest M. Night Shyamalan film which I’m intrigued about. I like the premise and while I don’t like that the trailer gave a major plot point away, I’m still wondering what the big twist will be...if any. I’m glad Josh Hartnett is back on the scene after taking a break away from the movies. This one has the potential to be one of Shyamalan’s good recent films. (Release Date: August 2)

Cuckoo

Seriously. This is a solid month for horror movies. This one looks wild AF. When I watched Longlegs and they played the trailer for this movie the place went silent. Such a cool thing. The hype is real and all I know is this girl moves from America to the German Alps and crazy shit starts happening. This one needs to be watched in the dark theater.

(Release Date: August 9)

The Instigators

If you don’t want to watch horror this month you can watch this buddy comedy/heist movie starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. It doesn’t look like anything special but it has a pretty decent cast and I’m sure is good for some laughs and some solid action sequences. Also, anytime I see Matt Damon in a car I think Jason Bourne. Just me?

(Release Date: August 9 on Apple+)

Alien: Romulus

This is going to be the best movie of the month in my opinion. This movie had an awesome trailer and should be a great addition to the Alien franchise. Set between the original Alien and Aliens, so this is a good time to go back and watch the originals. This movie will have plenty of gore and plenty of action. Will it make the most money of the franchise? I don’t think so but it could find its way into the top 3. (Release Date: August 16)

The Crow

I heard about this and was excited. Then I saw the trailer. It’s not my favorite. I want to give it a chance and even put it on my list. I’m still afraid it is going to suck. The original film is a cult classic. I will give it a chance and I hope that it does surprise me and being better than I’m expecting. I like Bill Skarsgard and he is a great Pennywise so let’s see what he can do with The Crow (Release Date: August 23)

Afraid

I also have some hopes for this one as I need Blumhouse to deliver after that dump of a movie Night Swim they released earlier this year. This one is about a family chosen to test a new smart home with AI (appropriate for the times). It’s giving Megan vibes without the doll but still looks like a creepy enough thriller. (Release Date: August 30)

A pretty decent slate of movies coming this month. It is definitely heavy on the horror/thriller side with my feeling that Trap or Alien: Romulus will be the best ones of the month. Which movies are you going to watch? Let me know in the comments. Cheers and Happy Viewing!
