"Then we have Anthony Carrigan as Hank who absolutely steals the show. Hank will have you dying with laughter"
Through 8 seasons, Game of Thrones kept fans hanging on to every line, every scene, every death and intense moment that made the show so great. Now it is officially over and many people find themselves wondering, “what do we watch now?” No need to worry I have you covered.
I am going to try to focus on shows still currently on and I am going to try and highlight some shows you may not have heard of. First off, shows you have probably heard of and you should absolutely check out include Black Mirror, Ozark, Big Little Lies, Chernobyl, Jack Ryan, Westworld, The Punisher, Vikings, The Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Hand Maids Tale, and The Man in the High Castle.
If you haven’t started any of those shows, that is a good place to start. Now let’s assume you have heard of those and either watched them already or decided they aren’t for you, here are a few more under the radar suggestions.
Barry
Where to Watch - HBO
Number of Seasons - 2
Number of Episodes - 16
The Pitch -
Barry is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a hitman who wants to quit and become an actor. An intriguing enough concept that doesn’t even begin to do the actual story justice. The plot line is compelling, thrilling and hilarious.
The story takes all kinds of twists and turns and you never know what is going to happen. The secondary characters are beyond hilarious. Stephen Root plays Fuches Barry’s hitman broker who tried to convince Barry to remain a hitman. Henry Winkler plays Gene Cousineau, Barry’s acting coach and new mentor and does so in classic Henry Winkler fashion. Then we have Anthony Carrigan as Hank who absolutely steals the show. Hank will have you dying with laughter. There are countless other great characters and great acting performances just give Barry a shot and you will see.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Where to Watch - Amazon
Number of Seasons - 2
Number of Episodes - 18
The Pitch -
This comedy starring Rachel Brosahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel as a mother and wife whose perfect housewife life is shattered one day and she turns to stand up comedy. The plot takes place in the 1950’s a time when women stand up comedians were rare and raunchy women stand up comedian were non existent.
The story mostly follows Midge and her agent/manager Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) who is equally hilarious. The story is interesting, funny and different. You see the difficulties of working women in that time, especially in certain professions. The characters are well developed and the entire show is put together very well. Give it a try and you just might fall in love with it.
The Good Place
Where to Watch - NBC/Netflix
Number of Seasons - 3
Number of Episodes - 39
The Pitch -
This comedy features one of my favorite actresses Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop who wakes up and finds herself in heaven. Sounds perfect right? The only issue is that the life being described to her by the architect (Ted Danson) of this particular branch of heaven isn’t her life. There’s been a mix up and she actually doesn’t belong in heaven, she belongs in the other place. The entire cast kills it but especially the always great Kristen Bell. Ted Danson as the architect who keeps messing up is also spot on. Eleanor must learn to become a better person with the help of her heaven appointed sole mate Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper).
The Good Place receives standout performances from Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil and Manny Jacinto as well as D’Arcy Carden as Janet. Elenaor starts to realize that everything has consequences and things start to get weird. The story takes plenty of turns and keeps you guessing to the very end. If you haven’t given it a try now is the time.
I know summer is here and if you haven’t planned any vacations at the moment, I have given you plenty of excellent shows to binge watch. You can thank me later.
